Kayaking Volusia County, FL with the Manatees Jan 14, 2015

Back in the day on the St Johns River it was a hub of traffic and commerce. Mississippi style Paddle wheel boats and African Queen type Steamers opened up this area. Today it was just us kayakers and a few small fishing boats along with the wildlife. Bald Eagles, Manatees and the Barred Owl all gave us a close look and the Great Egrets, Little Blue Herons, Anhingas, Cormorants and Snowy Egrets all stopped by at one time or another. The Red Maple Trees are popping with whirly whirls and the Elms are shooting out new sprouts. The Spatterdock Water Lilies and Primrose are blooming their Winter yellow. It was a chilly day, overcast and we only saw 1 reptile... a lone Red-bellied River Cooter was sitting back in the swamps. He must have been really cold ;-). There is a mystique on the river that occurs no where else and it's always a great place to spend a day.
