Girls Day paddling with the wildlife of Blue Springs - Orange City, FL

Three of us set out on our kayak tour of the St Johns River and Blue Springs looking for the wildlife. As we paddled into the clear waters of Blue Springs we got quite the show. We were fortunate enough to see a young Manatee hanging around, Longnose Garfish were everywhere, Tilapia, Mullet, Giant Grass Carp and a Koi. We got a chance to see the one-eyed Gator and while the Green Heron was sitting on the bank fishing just a few feet away from us we also spotted Great Blue and Little Blue Herons fishing along the river’s edge. It was a great morning spent kayaking with the girls and exploring the river!

Kayaking with the Dwarf Cypress of Blackwater Lake

Graeme came over from the UK and paddled with us on 2 separate trips. Blackwater Lake was our second adventure. Bumping over logs and downed trees we worked our way out of the swamp into the forgotten world of the ancient Cypress Trees that rim this beautiful lake. Each tree is totally different from the next. Air Plants, Spanish Moss, Quill-leaf and Orchids cover the overhanging branches. We got a nice peek at Little and Great Blue Herons, White Ibis and an Anhinga was sighted as well. The Ospreys have arrived and are building large nests in the trees. On the way back a Barred Owl watched us watch him as we glided through the swamps of Blackwater Creek. A great day for paddling and great company with which to be paddling.

Kayaking with the treasures of the St Johns River Jan 25, 2017

Art and Susan came out for their 3rd kayaking tour with us and chose the St Johns River today. Starting our tour in a cold dense fog we set out with our eyes wide open. The female Anhingas are now sporting their full on breeding plumage; her beautiful fluorescent green eye ring is quite the sight! Bald Eagles were the sentinels for us, we also saw Limpkins plus Ibis, Cattle Egrets and many more. The Tri-colored Herons, Green Herons, Snowy Egrets, Little Blue Herons and Great Egrets were all feeding right next to one another. We found a record breaking 7 American Bitterns today and when the fog lifted the Sandhill Cranes gave us a honk as they flew by. We had a Manatee come over to give us a closer look and as the day warmed the Alligators and Turtles came out to enjoy the sunshine too. It was another beautiful Florida day on the water!

A little Manatee expedition January 3, 2017

January 3, 2017 and its 84 degrees on the St Johns River. A warm southerly wind was in our faces as we paddled downstream on a Manatee quest. We had a Bald Eagle fly by, a Big Alligator up out of the cold water sunning and White Ibis by the dozens resting in the trees. A medium sized Manatee came over and gave us a long close look and there were many in the sanctuary. Off in the swamps we spotted Snowy Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Great Egrets, Limpkins, Little Blue Herons and the Turtles were out as well. The wildlife and birdlife are starting to pair up, youngsters will soon be born and it was a great day to be celebrating life on the river!
